Shiawassee Conservation District Resource Assessment

The Shiawassee Conservation District develops a Resource Assessment every five years. The assessment evaluates the current condition of Shiawassee County’s natural resources. It is completed with input from Shiawassee County residents so that together we can prioritize where our conservation efforts are most needed.

Soil Testing

It is important to learn what nutrients are in your soil, and what nutrients should be added to achieve the best plant growth. Having your soil tested, and following the recommendations can protect our streams, lakes, rivers, and groundwater by avoiding runoff of excess fertilizers, and can save money by not applying what is not needed.

For information on how to take a soil test and how to read the results visit the Michigan State University’s Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences Soil and Plant Nutrient Laboratory website.

Farmland and Open Space Preservation Programs

The Farmland and Open Space Preservation Program preserves farmland and open space. Visit the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Farmland and Open Space Preservation Programs website for more information.

Web Soil Survey

The Web Soil Survey is a free service operated by the Natural Resources Conservation Service. It provides access to soil maps and data across the United States.

Water Testing

It is important to have clean and safe drinking water. Some water quality issues are caused by the distribution system and plumbing the house. The only way to ensure your drinking water is safe is to have it tested.

Recommended tests:

  • Coliforms/E.coli (Bacteriology)
  • Partial Chemistry (includes testing for Fluoride, Chloride, Hardness, Nitrate, Nitrite, sulfate, Sodium, and Iron)
  • Arsenic
  • Lead

Some water testing bottles may be available at the Shiawassee Conservation District office or the Shiawassee County Environmental Health Department.

Free Well Water Screening for Nitrates and Nitrites

The Shiawassee Conservation District, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development offers free well water screening annually to test for nitrates and nitrites to help ensure the safety of households who rely on private wells for their drinking water.
