What You May Not Know About Electronic Recycling

In 2013, the Shiawassee Conservation District launched a highly success electronic recycling program in partnership with Comprenew. Recently, the District sat down with Scott Vanerkooy at Comprenew to discuss electronic recycling and see what happens to the items that are dropped off during our collections.

Electronics Waste Recycling Collection

Electronic waste (e-Waste) is unwanted, non-working, or obsolete electronic devices that have reached the end of its useful life. Untreated e-Waste may contain hazardous material, which can pose serious risks to human health and the environment. Toxins contained in electronics, such as mercury and lead, can leach into drinking water and accumulate in plants and animals if not disposed of properly.

Recycle your unwanted or broken electronics for free!

Simply load your e-Waste into your vehicle, drive to the drop off site, and we will do the rest.

Electronics Recycling Collection Event

Electronic waste (e-Waste) is unwanted, non-working, or obsolete electronic devices that have reached the end of its useful life. Untreated e-Waste may contain hazardous material, which can pose serious risks to human health and the environment. Toxins contained in electronics, such as mercury and lead, can leach into drinking water and accumulate in plants and animals if not disposed of properly.

The Shiawassee Conservation District has conducted seven e-Waste recycling events since the fall of 2013. Beginning in 2016, financial assistance to help offer the event a no charge to Shiawassee County residents has been awarded to the Shiawassee Conservation District from Shiawassee County’s Waste Management Corporate Donation Fund.

Since the first collection held in the fall of 2013 162,240 pounds of e-Waste has been collected from residents across Shiawassee County, helping to protect our waters from these dangerous materials.

“We appreciate the incredible support shown to us by Shiawassee County residents. E-Waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the county and we see the need here is Shiawassee County to provide this service”
– Melissa Higbee, Shiawassee Conservation District Executive Director
